Sony reveals blue 250GB PS3 for $250, exclusive to GameStop

Sony is hoping that by now you either don't already own a PlayStation 3, or direlyneed a game console to match your primary colored living room decor beforeNovember 15th. To that end, the tech giant is releasing the previously Japan-only"azurite blue" PS3 Superslim exclusively to GameStop. The console sports a 250GB hard drive, one matching DualShock 3 controller and a $249.99 price tag -- kinda makes that $200 12GB model look a bit silly now, doesn't it? Pre-orders open up tomorrow and you'll be able to pick one up from your favorite GameStop or Canadian EB Games starting October 8th.
GameStop to Roll out Exclusive Blue Sony PlayStation®3 Console
Sony Computer Entertainment revealed today at the 2013 GameStop Conference, it's annual event for field and store managers, located in Las Vegas, NV, that an exclusive blue Sony PlayStation 3 will be available only at U.S GameStop and Canadian EB Games store locations starting on October 8th, 2013.
The new Azurite Blue PlayStation®3 system includes an Azurite Blue DualShock®3 wireless controller, a 250GB hard drive, a built in Blu-Ray™ player, and can hold over 1800 games, 140 movies, 99,000 songs, and 40,000 photos, or a mixture of all.
GameStop plans to begin offering customers the ability to pre-order the new system as early as tomorrow. The Azurite Blue PlayStation®3 system retails for $249.99 at all GameStop locations, and at www.GameStop.com.
Make plans now to purchase the new console, as it will only be available for a limited time.

Sony unveils 16.1MP NEX-5T with NFC and WiFi, available this September

We assure you, the camera pictured above is not the NEX-5R. Announced today alongside three new E-mount lenses and the A3000, it's actually Sony's new NEX-5T. This shooter's unique feature is the addition of NFC for tap-to-device transfers of videos and photos -- a nice complement to the WiFi connectivity. Aside from that, it's pretty similar to its predecessor. Internally, you'll find the same 16.1-megapixel APS-C sensor with a maximum ISO sensitivity of 25,600 and hybrid phase-/contrast-detect autofocus for still images. The outside houses the familiar 921k-dot 3-inch touchscreen (with 180 degrees of rotation), a rear-set navigation dial and a function button (both programmable) adjacent to the shutter button.Photographers and videographers alike should be pleased with 1080/60p video capture and continuously focused 10-frames-per-second burst shooting. This NEX can also handle Sony's various Play Memories Camera Apps for extended versatility.
The NEX-5T is set to launch this September in white, black and silver for $700 with a 16-50mm pancake powered-zoom lens, and $550 for just the body. For now, grab a better glimpse by checking out the embedded galleries. Full press release after the break.

Google Glass for bespectacled coming in a 'few months'

Google Glass for bespectacled coming in a 'few months'

Google Glass for contact lenses? In the distant future perhaps, says project leader

IDG News Service - A version of Google Glass for people who already wear glasses will arrive in a few months, the head of the Google project said Monday.

"In the next few months we will release a version that will integrate into glasses. So if you are wearing glasses, you'd be able to use this," said Babak Parviz, founder and head of the Google Glass project at Google, during a speech at the Hot Chips conference in Stanford, California, on Tuesday.
If the Google Glass platform is successful, "you'll see different optics," Parviz said.
But will there be Google Glass contact lenses? That is possible, but perhaps in the distant future, Parviz said. "In principle that's a doable thing, someday actually in the future contact lenses may arrive. It's not immediate."
As a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle, Parviz worked on putting displays in contact lenses.
"It was fun, we went all the way to 1-pixel on a contact lens that worked wirelessly, but even that was quite difficult," Parviz said.
In his speech, Parviz talked about the promise of Google Glass as a possible successor to smartphones for communications and information. It provides immediate and hands-free access to information, and can overlay the data on what may seem like a large screen.

"The cell phones screens... are limited for the most part to what the cell phone is. It would be very difficult to get a cinema-size display if you don't have a form factor like this," Parviz said.
Google ships its own smartphones and provides the OS for hundreds of millions of Android phones, but Glass has its own advantages. Smartphones, tablets and Google Glass will be able to co-exist, but ultimately the cutting-edge technology will take over, Parviz said. Google Glass could take over from smartphones the way mobile devices took over from computers and telephones as communications tools.
"It's not to say the smartphones aren't good, but there are certain things definitely unique to this platform that smartphones will not be able to do," Parviz said.
There are privacy concerns as well, and Parviz said it will take some time for society to figure out Google Glass. He likened the Google Glass to the first time the camera came out in the late 1800s, which caused an uproar because people were scared that someone would violate their privacy by randomly taking their picture on a street. Now cameras are part of our daily lives, Parviz said.
Google is trying to improve the hardware.
The company wants Google Glass to last all day on a single charge, while delivering the performance to handle the vast amount of information it collects. It also needs to interact better with the human body and environment through optics and photonics. Another challenge is video processing, as the device may capture a lot of video, and also be used for augmented reality.
"What we have today is a good solid first step, but not enough especially for video processing. Because the more this platform is successful, we're going to be collecting more video," Parviz said.
Another goal is to keep the device stylish, while reducing the size of components and keeping power consumption down.
"We're very excited about this platform," Parviz said. "We've made some really solid progress in the right direction and hopefully we can accelerate that."

Dell commits again to Windows 8 for business tablets

Dell commits again to Windows 8 for business tablets:

Dell plans to release more Windows 8 tablets and convertibles for business users later this year, a senior exec said

IDG News Service - Windows 8 may be seeing sluggish demand, but Dell believes its the best OS for business tablets and plans to roll out more products built with the operating system later this year, a senior executive said Tuesday.
"The reason that our Windows tablets are more secure and easier to manage than Android-based products and iOS-based products is because of Windows on our tablets," said Dell vice chairman and president of global operations Jeff Clarke. "And we are not going to change that."
Clark made the comments while speaking to journalists at the Dell Solutions Summit in Beijing on Tuesday. He added that the company was focused on building tablets for business users, and not for consumers. "In business tablets we can differentiate our offerings from our competition," he said, pointing to Dell's work in making the devices more secure and easier to deploy for businesses.
Windows-based tablets still only make up a small portion of the tablet market, with a share of 4.5 percent in this year's second quarter, according to research firm IDC. In contrast, Apple's iPad had a 32.5 percent of the tablet market, while tablets running Google's Android had 62.6 percent.
The slow adoption of Windows 8 tablets is partly the result of their high prices, and the OS's lack of mobile apps, according to analysts. The Windows 8 operating system has also received mixed reviews, with some citing its lack of Start Button in the desktop mode as a major problem.
But Dell expects demand for Windows 8 devices to pick up following the release of Windows 8.1, which Microsoft will release in October. "It is a dramatic improvement over the first version of Windows 8," Clarke said.
The company's commitment to Windows 8, however, doesn't preclude it from coming out with Android tablets in the future. Dell evaluates all operating systems, but is focused on Windows 8, he said.
The company's own Windows 8 tablet, called the Latitude 10, starts at US$499.

How Google just quietly made your Android phone more secure?

Google made yet another significant improvement to the Android operating system. And -- once again -- the company structured the upgrade in a way that'll affect nearly every Android user, regardless of Android version.
I'm talking about a little thing called Android Device Manager. The feature, announced earlier this month, lets you easily find, ring, and even remotely reset your Android device from any phone, tablet, or computer.

Up till now, you'd have had to go out of your way to install (and sometimes pay for) a third-party utility in order to get such functionality. Now it's built right into Android, whether you realize it or not -- and it's always ready and available, with no added apps or running services required.
It took a little while for Android Device Manager to roll out to everyone, but so long as you're running the now-ancient Android 2.2 or higher, it's patiently waiting for you this very minute. In order to unlock its full potential, though, there's something you need to do.
Android Device Manager MapIt's easy: Just grab your phone or tablet, open up the app called Google Settings (look in your app drawer -- it's there), and select the option called Android Device Manager. Then make sure the boxes for both "Remotely locate this device" and "Allow factory reset" are checked. The first one should be activated by default, but the second -- the one that could really save your hide in a bind -- has to be enabled by hand.
Once you've got both those settings confirmed, you're all set. Just go togoogle.com/android/devicemanager from any mobile device or computer, and you'll see your phone pinpointed on a Google Map. You can ring it -- at full volume for a full five minutes -- or, in a worst-case scenario, perform a factory reset and wipe all your info right then and there.
If you have multiple Android devices connected to your account, clicking the small down arrow next to the first device's name will show you a list of every phone and tablet you've got. Just be sure to follow the steps we just discussed on each device -- right now -- so they're all fully activated and operational.

Java How to Program 9th Edition ( include Examples) by Deitel n Deitel

Introduction:

Welcome to Java and Java How to Program, Ninth Edition! This book presents leadingedge computing technologies for students, instructors and software developers. The new Chapter 1 engages students with intriguing facts and figures to get them excited about studying computers and programming. The chapter includes a table of some of the research made possible by computers; current technology trends and hardware discussion; the data hierarchy; a table of mobile and Internet app platforms; a new section on social networking; an introduction to Android; a table of popular web services; a table of business and technology publications and websites that will help you stay up to date with the latest technology news and trends; and updated exercises. The book is appropriate for introductory course sequences based on the ACM/IEEE curriculum recommendations and for AP Computer Science exam preparation. We focus on software engineering best practices.

Database and Web Development:

JDBC 4. Chapter 28, Accessing Databases with JDBC, covers JDBC 4 and uses the Java DB/Apache Derby and MySQL database management systems. The chapter features an OO case study on developing a database-driven address book that demonstrates prepared statements and JDBC 4’s automatic driver discovery. Java Server Faces (JSF) 2.0. Chapters 29–30 have been updated to introduce JavaServer Faces (JSF) 2.0 technology, which greatly simplifies building JSF web applications. Chapter 29 includes examples on building web application GUIs, validating forms and session tracking. Chapter 30 discusses data-driven and Ajaxenabled JSF applications.
Multithreading GUI and Graphics:
Object-oriented programming and design. We introduce the basic concepts and terminology of object technology in Chapter 1. Students develop their first customized classes and objects in Chapter 3. Presenting objects and classes early gets students “thinking about objects” immediately andmastering these concepts more thoroughly. [For courses that require a late-objects approach, consider Java How to Program, Late Objects Version, 8/e, which begins with six chapters on programming fundamentals (including two on control statements) and continues with seven chapters that gradually introduce object-oriented programming concepts.] Exception handling. We integrate basic exception handling earlier in the book and instructors can easily pull more material forward from Chapter 11, Exception Handling: A Deeper Look.
Class Arrays and ArrayList. Chapter 7 covers class Arrays—which contains methods for performing common array manipulations—and class ArrayList— which implements a dynamically resizable array-like data structure. This follows our philosophy of getting lots of practice using existing classes while learning how to define your own classes. OO case studies. The early classes and objects presentation features Time, Employee and GradeBook class case studies that weave their way through multiple sections and chapters, gradually introducing deeper OO concepts.
Optional Case Study: Using the UML to Develop an Object-Oriented Design and Java Implementation of an ATM. TheUML™ (UnifiedModeling Language™) is the industry-standard graphical language for modeling object-oriented systems. Chapters 12–13 include an optional case study on object-oriented design using the UML. We design and implement the software for a simple automated teller machine (ATM). We analyze a typical requirements document that specifies the system to be built. We determine the classes needed to implement that system, the attributes the classes need to have, the behaviors the classes need to exhibit and specify how the classes must interact with one another to meet the system requirements. From the design we produce a complete Java implementation. Students often report having a “light-bulb moment”—the case study helps them “tie it all together” and really understand object orientation.
The chapter features a database-driven multitier web address book that allows users to add and search for contacts. This Ajax-enabled application gives the reader a nice sense of Web 2.0 software development. Web services. Chapter 31, Web Services, demonstrates creating and consuming SOAP- and REST-based web services. Case studies include developing blackjack and airline reservation web services. Java Web Start and the Java Network Launch Protocol (JNLP). We introduce Java Web Start and JNLP, which enable applets and applications to be launched via a web browser. Users can install locally for later execution. Programs can also request the user’s permission to access local system resources such as files—enabling you to develop more robust applets and applications that execute safely using Java’s sandbox security model, which applies to downloaded code.
Multithreading. We completely reworked Chapter 26, Multithreading [special thanks to the guidance of Brian Goetz and Joseph Bowbeer—two of the co-authors of Java Concurrency in Practice, Addison-Wesley, 2006]. SwingWorker class. Weuse class SwingWorker to create multithreaded user interfaces.
Scalable GUI and graphics presentation. Instructors teaching introductory courses have a broad choice of the amount of GUI and graphics to cover—from none, to an optional 10-brief-sections introductory sequence woven in with the early chapters, to a deep treatment in Chapters 14, 15 and 25, and Appendix I. GroupLayout layout manager. We discuss the GroupLayout layout manager in the context of the GUI design tool in the NetBeans IDE. JTable sorting and filtering capabilities. Chapter 28 uses these capabilities to resort the data in a JTable and filter it by regular expressions.

How to be a software developer without a computer science degree

“How to be a software developer without a computer science degree” is one common question being asked by many people. Regardless of what you might have heard before, all it takes is passion and commitment. That being said however, there are a few other things that you should do to reach your goal.

The question is : can I become software developer without a cs degree? The simplest answer is an astounding YES. Here are a few steps you need to take to be one.

How To Be a Software Developer Without a CS Degree

  1. Make a decision - Yeah, seriously. Deciding on something is not as easy as it may sound. The other worst thing is regretting after investing both time and money on something you really don’t like. So, once again, be sure that you want to be a computer programmer. After that, the sky could be the limit!
  2. Choose a programming language - In order for you to write code, you need to understand at least one language, the more the better! By learning the ins and out of a particular language like Python or C++ , you empower yourself with the necessary tools of trade.
  3. Practice, practice and practice - A few days ago, I wrote Learn How To Program in 21 days – NOT and it generated a lot of reactions on Reddit. The point of the whole thing is simple; if you want to be good at something, you have to do it over and over and over again. Make mistakes, find solutions, and repeat! The good thing is this: we all start somewhere.
  4. Open Source and Own Projects - I cannot stress this enough! Most companies specializing in Software are obsessed with Experience! Unless you are a rock star - which most of us aren’t. Instead of asking yourself how they expect you to have experience when you are looking for your first programming job, beat them by taking part in open source projects and most certainly, your own projects if you can. You need something to show them that you are capable. You have a better chance if you can show them your portfolio than a fresh college graduate who has none.
  5. Networking - If this sounds familiar, it is because I have mentioned it before under What to do after college and without a job. You could have the coolest resume in town and keep wondering why you don’t land the best jobs. I believe networking is more of people skills than anything in between. This should start in college but if you didn’t go to college, you can still catch up through LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and most importantly, local meetups and events. This also requires good communication. Listen to people in the industry.Subscribe to their blogs. Talk to them. There is a good chance that one of them will refer you when you are looking for a job. You just never know!
Those are the five most important things you should do if you want to become a software developer without a cs degree. Today, you must be competitive and be willing to work a little harder in order to get what you want. It is still advisable to earn a degree because you learn more from college professors and meet friends who could be potential startup buddies.
Not having a cs degree doesn’t have to stop you from being a software developer. You are, without doubt, the only one who can stop yourself. So, without much ado, go forth. Start your new career with confidence knowing that the future is brighter. Good luck.
