how to make logical partition
Instructions
- 1Click the Start button, then click "Control Panel."
- 2Double-click "Administrative Tools." If you do not see this option, click the "Switch to Classic View" link on the left side of the window.
- 3Double-click "Computer Management."
- 4Click "Disk Management" on the left side of the window, under "Storage." If the hard drive has never been used before, it must be initialized. Click "Next" through the prompts to initialize the drive. When this is complete, a black rectangle titled "Unallocated" represents the hard drive on the bottom of the window.
- 5Right-click the "Unallocated" rectangle and select "New Partition." Click "Next."
- 6Select "Primary Partition" and click "Next."Note: It is not necessary for a hard drive to contain a primary partition. However, if it doesn't, Windows cannot boot from the drive. If you do not want to create a primary partition, skip to the "New Partition" instructions below.
- 7Type the amount of space in megabytes (MB) that you want to devote to the primary partition. Keep this number small if you want to create many logical partitions, as the primary partition will not hold any logical partitions.
- 8Click "Next" through the remaining prompts, then click "Finish." Windows will recommend formatting the partition using the NTFS file system. Generally, you should not change this unless you have a specific reason for doing so. The primary partition is created and the remainder of the drive is labeled "Unallocated."
- 9Right-click the remaining unallocated space and click "New Partition." Click "Next."
- 10Select "Extended Partition" and click "Next." Windows automatically devotes all remaining hard drive space to the extended partition. You should keep this setting, because all of the logical partitions will be housed within the extended partition.
- 11Click "Next" through the prompts until you reach the end. Click "Finish." The extended partition is now displayed with a green rectangle labeled "Free Space."
- 12Right-click the "Free Space" rectangle and click "New Logical Drive." Click "Next" twice.
- 13Type the amount of space in MBs that you want to devote to the first logical partition, then click "Next" through the prompts until you reach the end. Click "Finish." The first logical partition is now displayed as a light blue rectangle while the remainder of the extended partition is still labeled "Free Space."
- 14Repeat the previous two steps until all of the free space has been subdivided into logical partitions. Close the Disk Manager when you are finished.
